How To Eliminate Debt Legally

If you find that you are deep in debt and are unable to make the payments demanded of you, you may feel you are in a downward spiral. It can be frustrating, especially when you have a number of credit cards you are trying to pay off at once. Here are some tips to help you eliminate debt legally.

First of all, there is no fast way to get rid of debt, unless you are able to pay them all off in one day. This is not possible for most people, so it's time to consider other options.

Making minimum payments is a must. Let's say you have three cards that each have a minimum monthly payment of $50. This means that each month you are paying $150 to pay off your debts. Of course, it will speed up the process if you feel that you can afford to pay more than that each month. For our example we will say that you can pay $200 per month, but making minimum payments is fine, too, as long as you plan to spend a consistent amount of money on your debt every month until every card is paid off.

Now you need to decide which card you would like to pay off first. It may be wise to choose the one with the highest interest rate. Or you may want to start with the one that has the lowest balance so you can get it taken care of quickly. Take some time and decide in what order you'd like to pay your cards off.

Now you are ready. This month you will pay $100 on the card that you want to pay off first, and $50 on each of the other cards. Continue this every month until you have paid off the entire balance of the first card.

Now you have only two cards to pay off. Take the second card that you wanted to pay off, and transfer everything you were paying on the card that was paid off ($100) to the monthly payment for this card. You will now be paying $150 per month for this card. Very soon this card will be paid off and you will be left with only one card to pay off.

Now you have your entire credit card payment budget to pay on this one card. You will pay $200 every month until it is paid off.

This is a simplified example, but the principle is easy to follow and you can do it with your own cards. It is a very systematic approach and can really make you feel like you're taking back control of your finances. You will be surprised with how quickly those cards are paid off.

Also, if you have any charged off debt, there is no need to worry. Your credit rating has already been affected, but you can make arrangements with the collection agency to get the debt paid off, and with your plan to pay off your other debt, you will work toward improving your credit record.
